A fictional email from Warren Buffet on the virtue of patience in investing
Dear Investor,
I hope this email finds you in good health and high spirits. I wanted to take a moment to discuss an important virtue that has been instrumental in my own investment journey: patience.
Patience is the ability to remain calm and composed even in the face of market fluctuations and short-term volatility. It is the key to successful long-term investing, as it allows you to stay focused on the bigger picture and not be swayed by short-term noise.
In today’s fast-paced world, where information flows at the speed of light, it is easy to get caught up in the relentless pursuit of quick profits. However, I have always believed in the power of a patient approach to investing. I have often said that the stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient, and I stand by that statement.
True wealth creation takes time. It requires discipline, understanding, and above all, patience. Instead of trying to time the market or chase after the latest hot trend, I encourage you to adopt a long-term perspective. Invest in quality companies with a durable competitive advantage and sound fundamentals, and then be patient.
Market downturns are inevitable, and they often create incredible buying opportunities for those with patience. Remember, the market is driven by emotions in the short term, but in the long term, it reflects the true value of businesses. Therefore, it is essential to focus on the underlying fundamentals of your investments and not get caught up in short-term market gyrations.
I understand that it can be challenging to remain patient when others around you may be experiencing short-term gains. But I want to remind you that successful investing is not a sprint but a marathon. It is about creating wealth over time and ensuring that your investment decisions are driven by careful analysis and rational thinking, rather than by emotional impulses.
In closing, I urge you to embrace the power of patience in your investment journey. Stay focused, stay disciplined, and stay patient. Remember that great fortunes are not built overnight but over a period of time through a patient and intelligent approach to investing.
Wishing you the best of luck in your investing endeavors.
Warm regards,
Warren Buffett
Editor’s note: Of course, this is a fictional email, nevertheless I believe it illustrates an important point. The virtue of patience in investing. This is a marathon not a sprint. Too many people chase the new “thing”, the shiny object, or whatever is trending on FinTwit.
I have found that real wealth creation takes time. After many years of trial and error, I also realized that one makes their money when they buy. If you buy assets when they are cheap and are patient until they are re-valued higher you will become very wealthy.
That is what we try and accomplish with the Actionable Intelligence Alert Newsletter. I think we have been fairly successful over the last several years as the letter has crushed the S&P 500. Obviously, past performance is not a guarantee of future performance but I am confident that the system we have in place of identifying undervalued assets and holding them until the market revalues them higher is the best way for an individual to amass wealth in the stock market long term.
